Wes Montgomery - 1966 [1999] "Tequila"


Tequila is the seventeenth jazz album recorded by guitarist Wes Montgomery and released in 1966.

Tequila is a mixture of tracks using just a jazz quartet with Ron Carter, Grady Tate and Ray Barretto and the rest with a string section arranged by Claus Ogerman. It is mainly a Latin-flavored album, the first Montgomery recorded without a keyboardist.
It was reissued on CD in 1999 and 2008 with alternate takes that are listed below.

  1. So glad you're back. I've been looking for this album from Wes Montgomery for about 15 years. It's great to be able to hear the entire album. There are some great musicians on this session. Thanks.

  2. Listening to this again today. What a great record. The strings mostly enhance Wes' playing, though they seem to overwhelm him in a few spots. Ray Barretto on congas does a great job of putting extra spin on the great rhythmic foundation laid down by Tate and Carter. Back in 1966 when this came out, my musical interests were mostly limited to the Beatles, and Beethoven. It would be another 20 years or so before I had my ears opened to the greatness of Wes Montgomery.
